Gorontolo
Gorontalo is one of my favorite areas as it is off the beaten path but with excellent flight access and amenities. The diving is immediately offshore, hence short boat rides. Walls, monster sponges and schools of fish make for fantastic UW photography. The fringing reefs are well protected and thrive with an abundance of plankton arriving daily from extremely deep water offshore. The macro is also excellent and offers additional species as found in other world famous places as Lembeh Bay, north Sulawesi. My favorite site is Jinn Caves, which is a fantastic combination site of multiple vertical walls, caverns and look-through cubby holes. This site, like many other wall dives in Gorontalo, can be initially intimidating due to their spellbinding grandness. Black coral, white fans, gargantuan red sea fans, batfish and thousands of glass fish decorate the undulating walls, slope breaks and caverns. The people of Gorontalo are friendly and forthcoming. Fishing villages are full of happy screaming kids following you on bicycles and parents will invite you in for tea….
